Political and economic uncertainties since the overthrow of the Ceaucescu dictatorship in December 1989 have raised urgent questions about the path of development Romania will take in the coming decade. The critical issue is whether the country will follow the Western example of a market economy and parliamentary democracy or choose another model closer to its agrarian socio-economic and Eastern cultural heritage.
